Super turnout for the Winter Cup & Scott Medal yesterday

There was a fantastic turnout of 124 players for the combined Winter Cup and Scott Medal.
After a brief delay for frost, the temperature picked up and the good weather and great condition of the course made for an exciting finish with 1 stroke separating the first 9 players.

Winter Cup

After a couple of cancellations it was third time lucky for the Winter Cup and it was worth waiting for with 4 players carding 67’s and a further 5 players only a stroke behind.
The first 3 players all scored gross 82 less a handicap of 15. The winner was decided on a countback and with a back nine of 31 the honours went to Tommy Toner edging out Alistair Hutson by a shot. Joe Kennedy was back in 34, the same as Stuart Graham but finished third on a countback over the last 6 holes with 21 shots compared to Stuart’s 22.

It was Tommy’s impressive scoring over the closing stretch that won it for him with a one under par gross finish over the closing 4 holes including a birdie on 17. Alistair’s 3 net birdies on the back nine were just not enough. The last 3 holes proved costly for Joe and Stuart, both finishing 3 over for the final holes.

Countback details were

Tommy Toner 67 31 18 9 1st
Alistair Hutson 67 32 21 11 2nd
Joe Kennedy 67 34 21 13 3rd
Stewart Graham 67 34 22 12 4th

Well done Tommy.

Scott Medal

Scoring proved tricky in the Division One competition with the best scratch score of 72 and only 2 players breaking 70 net. David Heeps took the honours with a gross 75, net 68, one shot ahead of Ged Sharkey’s gross 76, net 69. Although Ged had 3 birdies in his 76 compared to David’s 2, the positions were decided over the last two holes with a 3 shot swing after David finished birdie, par to Ged’s two bogeys.

David won £16.25 for first place in the sweep and Ged picked up £8.75 for second.

In Division 2, Winter Cup Tommy Toner took first place ahead of Alistair Hutson, both finishing on 67 off 15. Joe Kennedy matched these scores but lost out on the back nine countback.

Tommy won £35.75 for first place in the sweep and Alistair receives £19.25 for second.

In Division 3, Stuart Graham’s gross 86, net 67 was good enough to beat Gordon Somerville by 2 shots, Gordon scoring 87 less 18 for a 69. Stuart had a strong start including a birdie on 4 for a net eagle, going out in 33 and back in 34. Gordon came back in an impressive net 32, with a birdie on 17 but couldn’t catch Stuart.

Stuart picks up £28.60 in the sweep for his win with Gordon receiving £15.40 for second.

Three players has 2’s at the 15th. Connor Bennewith, Brian Lee and Steven Moffat each winning £33.07.

There was only one eagle on the day, a magnificent 2 at the 18th for Alan Jackson. Hitting the green in 2 at 18 is hard enough so well done Alan for scoring a net 1.

Qualifiers for the final were

Tommy Toner
Alistair Hutson
Joe Kennedy
Stewart Graham
David Heeps
Paul Bevis
Steven Moffat
Terry McCormack
Steven Peutherer

Congratulations to all winners and qualifiers.
