Nick Henderson triumphs in today’s Gents Seniors Championship Final.
Well done to Nick Henderson this afternoon in winning the Gents Seniors Championship in another epic match against Karl Conway.
Starting conditions were extremely tough with driving rain and strong winds.
This was the third meeting in a row for these two worthy Champions and with Karl successful the last twice he was keen to get the hat trick done, however Nick, produced a wonderful winning birdie at the first sudden death hole to take the title in a fantastic final.
Nick sank a 20 foot putt at the first to earn a half when looking beat but it was first blood to Karl at the second with Nick in trouble off the tee.
Nick hit straight back at the 3rd with a fantastic tee shot to 4 feet with Karl in sand trouble. Both players had birdie chances at 4 and 5 but they settled for pars to stay level.
Karl had an amazing escape at 6 with a sideways shot required from the trees followed up with a sublime approach to the green, he holed out for a par and a half.
Both players approach shots to 7 were fantastic, Karl hit to within 12 feet and Nick to 5 ft with Nick securing a brilliant birdie to take the lead for the first time in the game.
Karl hit straight back to win 8 and an unbelievable fairway bunker shot from an impossible lie saw Karl earn a half at 9 and keep the game all square at the turn.
At 10, Karl was strong favourite to win, on in regulation, but a disappointing three putt allowed Nick to walk over the bridge with a half.
However, Nick was in trouble at the par five 11th and Karl took full advantage to regain the lead. Holes 12, and 13 were halved in 4’s with Nick getting the match all square at 14 with a super two putt from distance for his par.
Both players had birdie putts on the short 15th and it was Nick who took the lead with a sensational 20 foot downhill putt for a two.
He kept momentum gong with a fantastic approach to 3 feet at 16 which he duly converted to go 2up with two to play, and now had the all-important momentum on his side at the business end of the game.
However, an overhit approach to the green at 17 opened the door for Karl to get one back and he took full advantage winning the hole and taking the match down the last.
Both hit terrific drives at 18 and Nick played his approach to within 10 feet only to be outdone by a fantastic pitch from Karl to around two feet. An incredible shot under pressure.
Nick had the chance for glory but left his birdie putt short and could only watch as Karl got his birdie to take the game into sudden death. Tenacious play indeed from Karl and another momentum swing.
Karl, hit an impressive shot into the green at the first extra hole with Nick way left off the tee leaving himself with a really tough shot over the trees on the left side of the fairway.
He then produced a sensational wedge to within eight feet for the chance of birdie.
Karl had first chance for birdie and narrowly missed for a conceded par.
Nick stepped up and holed for birdie to win a brilliant match.
What a cracking finish with both players producing 4 birdies in the final five holes.
Well done to both players for producing fantastic golf in difficult conditions and congratulations to Nick for a fantastic win today.
Thanks to those who braved the conditions alongside the players, I know they were very grateful for the support and encouragement during the game.
