Steven Johnston and Craig Bodel take top spot
Thankfully the weather has improved recently and the rescheduled Opening Day better ball competition was played in good conditions with little wind and sunny spells. The course has dried out nicely and was in superb condition which was reflected in the scores with some great shooting.
The top 6 teams were separated by 2 shots with the winners, Steven Johnston and Craig Bodel, scoring a fantastic 61. Steven and Craig were only 2 under net after 7 holes but birdies at 8 and 9 had them out in 32. They were then back in an excellent 29 thanks to 6 net birdies, 3 of them coming in the last 4 holes. Well done Steven and Craig. They win £25.75 each in the sweep.
5 teams were just 2 shots behind with second and third places having to be decided on count back. Taking runners up spot were Brian Gray and David Russell thanks to a back 9 of 30 and a last 6 holes of 20 beating Brian Robertson and Steven Moffat who were also back in 30 but had 21 on their last 6 holes. Brian and David had a net eagle on the 11th and their only blemish was a net bogey on the last. Brian and Steven had a net eagle of their own at the 12th which was followed by a birdie but they couldn’t keep the run going and finished with 5 pars. In the sweep, Brian and David win £15.45 each and Brian and Steven get £10.30 each.
Also on 63 were Alex Thomson and Gordon Cameron, Craig and Ray Stevens and Richard Boden and Kevin Brunton. Despite a birdie, birdie finish, Alex and Gordon were just outside the top 3 coming back in 31. Also back in 31 were Craig and Ray whose undoing was a net bogey at the 15th. Richard and Kevin were back in 32 and also bogeyed the 15th which contributed to being only 1 under net for the last 7 holes.

1st- S Johnston/C Bodel
2nd- B Gray/ D Russell
3rd- B Robertson/S Moffat
