Karl Conway Harburn Senior Champion 2024
Karl successfully retained his senior champion title after a final played over twenty holes as the finalists couldn’t be parted through eighteen.
Karl struck the first blow with his par at the first, enough to take an early lead over Nick Henderson. Nick restored parity with an excellent tee shot at hole 3 to card a birdie. Nick turned the tie in his favour with a solid par at hole 6 as Karl found trouble through the back of the green. Fittingly both players birdied the ninth hole to see the game one up in favour to Nick at the turn.
Karl levelled the match with an incredible approach to the tenth hole from inside the tree line left of the fairway. The ball coming to rest pin high and birdie distance. Nick conceded the hole after his par putt didn’t drop. Nick regained the lead after a solid par at 11 was enough to take the hole. Both players struggled with third shots into hole 14 and Karl’s bogey was enough to once again level the match. It looked like Karl would take 15 with his solid two putt par but Nick holed a clutch putt to keep the match level. Hole 16 seen Nick card a birdie to once again take the lead. Both players in excellent position on hole 17 and Karl’s approach went close. Nick made his regulation par with a solid two putt leaving Karl with a putt to tie the match which he duly holed for birdie. Hole 18 couldn’t seperate the players and the match headed back up the first. Once again Nick showed his metal with a tricky par putt from above the hole but it found the bottom of the cup and we were still level. Nick found the trees from the tee at the second and sadly his second shot flicked off the trees and disappeared from view. His provisional shot was exceptional and found the putting surface. Meanwhile Karl’s solid tee shot found the middle of the fairway and his second shot just came up short of the green. A hybrid running pitch seen his ball cosy up towards the hole. Nick now had a putt to apply pressure but it sadly didn’t drop. Caps off and Nick shook Karl’s hand to congratulate him on retaining his title.
A great match played in good spirit with both players carding gross 72’s, high standard indeed.
Congratulations Karl Conway.
