Steele Cup Second Round – 11 August 2024
🏆Alistair Milne wins the Steele Cup🏆
On a day resembling something like summer, it was a very exciting finish to the Steele Cup with 5 shots separating the first 7 players and it was Alistair Milne who kept his cool to win by a shot from John Daniel Brett and Scott O’Hagan. Alistair finished with a total aggregate score of 141 (71+70). John (70+72) took second spot from Scott (71+71) thanks to his low round of 70. First round leader Ryan Henderson was fourth on 143 (65+78).
Although the weather improved from round one, the course was just as challenging with only 4 players from the 103 starters breaking par. Alistair Milne was one of those to break par and his fine 70 (85-15) added to his first round 71 for a 141 total was good enough to take the title with John Daniel Brett and Scott O’Hagan just behind on 142. Alistair was back in 32 thanks to nett eagles at 10 and 14. Despite a bogey at 17, a par at 18 saw him win by a shot. Congratulations Alistair.
John followed up his first round 70 with a solid 72 (87-15) but a nett bogey, par, bogey finish saw him fall just short. Scott tied John on 142 with two rounds of 71 (76-5). In the second round he birdied 10 and 16 but a bogey at 17 saw him home in 35 to finish a shot behind.
The first round leaders found the going more difficult in round 2 with only Ryan Henderson staying in contention but a nett triple bogey at 16 saw him finish just outside the top 3.
Top scorer in round 2 was Oran McGhie with a superb 66 (77-11) finishing a shot ahead of Graham Purves (87-20). In third place on countback was Aaron Smith with a 70 (80-10) who finished just ahead of Graeme Souness (81-11). Both were back in 35 but Aaron covered the last 6 holes in 21 compared to Graeme’s 23. Oran wins £51 sweep money, Graham gets £30.60 for second and Aaron picks up £20.40 for third.
